The GHSA Soccer Championships are underway this week at Mercer University’s Five Star Stadium, and the first team to win a 2016 state title are the Lady Wildcats of Westminster who won the championship game by a 4-0 score over Blessed Trinity.

The Lady Wildcats were paced by the play of two sisters, senior Logue Shamburger and her sophomore sister, Ella Shamburger.   Logue got things rolling scoring the first of her two goals in the championship game, and Ella also  netted a goal as did Allie Smith Miller to make the final 4-0.

Westminster is a power house in girls soccer.  This year marked the eleventh  title in school history and the third in the last four years.

“It was great to go back to back and go out in the final game my senior year winning another ring to make it three out of the last four”, says Logue. “ Winning my last game and going out number 1  is really incredible”.  Sister Ella counters “going back to back is terrific and I have gone two for two in my career with my sister ”  as she winks at her sister.

I got a kick out of talking to these two siblings.  They obviously were on cloud nine after winning the GHSA title but also there was a lot of sisterly love there and some sisterly teasing as well.  I asked the younger one what it’s been like playing soccer  with the older one. “It’s been awesome especially winning state championships the last two years…………..” says Ella,   and before she could finish she gave her older sister a friendly poke in the ribs .  “ I will be playing against her in college , though.”

Now Logue is all set to play for the University of Alabama next year so I took the poke to mean her sister was thinking of heading to play at Auburn or a similar college rival,  but that’s just a reporters guess.

Westminster head coach Clark Meyer has had a ton of success at Westminster, and says this is a unique team. “ In the 19 years I have been here this team is special.  I am very proud of what this team has accomplished and this team has meant a lot to all of us.  It is sad to see this team play for the final time but it is a great way for this team to go out, with a championship.”

So The Lady Wildcats now own eleven  state titles, in 1984, 1996,1998,2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2013, 2015, and now 2016.  And the sisters Shamburger have been a huge part of that legacy of excellence.

Well Played.
