It is PLAYOFF TIME!!!

It is hard to believe that the regular season has ended, but it has, and now it is on to five weeks of exciting, thrill a minute, win and stay in, action packed playoff action.  This weekend 160 teams will strap on their pads and helmets and try to make it to the sweet sixteen in each classification. ( Single A  will take this weekend off and then the top 16 teams selected in both the Private and Public classifications will get things rolling next week.)

There are just a ton of great story lines.  Can Colquitt County run the table and  win 30 games in a row and back to back state championships?   Right now Packers coach Rush Propst has to like how his team is playing and the fact that they have earned home field advantage early on.  The Packers 33-14 win over previously unbeaten Camden County was quite a statement heading into the playoffs.

But 6A  is  loaded with good teams and Grayson, Roswell, and Mill Creek are likewise unbeaten, and Archer, McEachern, Camden County, and Walton with just one loss are also loaded with talent.

In 5A, Houston County knocked off the defending champs, Northside Warner Robins in the regular season finale.  Stockbridge is unbeaten as is Lanier, and after watching Stephenson’s defense against a very talented Mays team last week,  I have to think Coach Ron Gartrell has a team that can make it to the Georgia Dome.

In 4A, Cartersville behind the great play of quarterback Trevor Lawrence is ranked number one, but Woodward Academy, Mary Persons, and Bainbridge remain unbeaten and no one is forgetting about defending champ Buford, whose only loss was to 6A powerhouse, McEachern.

In 3A, Coach Hal Lamb’s Calhoun Yellow Jackets are undefeated and on top of the polls. Blessed Trinity is unbeaten with a 9-0-1 record and Dodge County is 10-0.

In 2A, Defending champion, Benedictine is 10-0. With Darlington the only other 2A team to run the gauntlet of the regular season without a blemish to the record.

And as I mentioned up top, 1A  will get underway next week.

So good luck to the 192 teams that made it through the regular season and now  has earned the right to play for a GHSA state championship.   It is five weeks of hard work, dedication, practice, perfect practice, film work, weight work, school work, and the teams that chalk up 4 wins……………….I will see you in the Georgia Dome as you go for a state title.  Best of Luck to All.
