High school baseball fans in Evans, Georgia are very proud of their Greenbrier Wolf Pack baseball team: this year’s GHSA Class 5A state champions. This is coach Jason Osborn’s second year as head coach and this year’s championship trophy will go right alongside those won in 1997-1998-1999-2006 and 2007. Coach Osborn told me at the beginning of the year that he wasn’t quite sure what kind of team was going to develop. “We knew we had good pitching, we lost a couple guys from last year’s team, but the defense was solid, and this team just kept getting better and better as the season went on," he said. The Wolf Pack definitely peaked at the right time winning two out of three from Gainesville to take the sixth title in school history. Pitching led the way. Adam Sasser, who has signed with the University of Georgia, was a standout on the mound with 77 strikeouts in 64 innings, a 1.86 ERA and a 6-1 record, as was Nick Sandlin, who will pitch next year at Southern Mississippi, posted an 11-2 record with 117 strike outs in 86 innings with an incredibly low 1.06 ERA. At the plate, guys like Braz Staples ( .360 batting average), Ty Snipes (.408), and Garrett Marchman (.407) led the hit parade, and catcher Davis Murray was solid behind the plate. As for the final game of the championship series, Coach Osborn said it was an awesome experience, as a lot of alumni came back to support the team. Plus, the got to watch the seniors go out on top. As for next year, the coach says he will lose his top two pitchers and four or five hitters, but that a lot of young talent is returning and he is looking forward to trying to win back to back titles next season. So in finality, congratulations to the Wolf Pack of Greenbrier High School of Evans, Georgia: this year’s 2015 Class 5A GHSA Baseball Champions.
