The Girls GHSA Tennis Championships are underway and once again, the team to beat in Class 6A is the Lady Raiders of Walton. The Walton Girls team has an outstanding pedigree, as they've won sixteen state championships in tennis, including the first in 1991 and a stretch of eight consecutive titles from 2004-2011. But let’s not forget the last two in 2012 and 2013. Coach Christina Lewis is in her fourth season as head coach and this team is loaded with talent. The Lady Raiders are also loaded with experience with seven seniors on the ten-member squad. Suzanne Zenoni leads the way at number 1 singles along with Bella Kuse and Johanna Keeline. Jessica Cramer and Sophia Guldberg play doubles and Sheena Mookerji and Kristin O’Brien add a lot of depth to the team. But there's no leaving out Anna Leigh Nielsen and twins Emily and Grace Gaskins: two talented sophomores who dominate in doubles. Coach Lewis says that the key to the continued success at Walton High School is having fantastic players who want to be a part of the tennis program. Lewis says a great school, a great community where tennis plays a big role, and players who want to be a part of that success all contribute to the dynasty-like program the Lady Raiders have built Of course, with seven seniors on the team and having won the last two state titles, a "three-peat" is on everyone’s mind. “The team is pumped up and with so many seniors, they all want to win one more state title and go out on top,” said Coach Lewis. The state championships this year will be held Saturday, May 9th...a day in which the Lady Raiders will go for an incredible seventeenth state title.
