It’s finally here! After wins, losses and in a very few cases, some ties, the prep football regular season is at its end this weekend. For many teams across the state it is literally the end of their football season. But for almost two hundred other teams here in the state, it is actually the end of one season and the beginning of yet another – the second season.

This weekend is always an interesting one. It is, in many cases, a championship week for many regions. But for others, it is time to watch a possible opponent for the opening round of the five-week run to the Georgia Dome which gets underway next week for Class AA through Class AAAAAA. Class A will swing into playoff action on November 21 after the teams have solidified the sixteen Class A private and public division team power rankings.

Twenty-plus region championships have already been decided but there are many more to go this weekend. In Class AAAAAA, McEachern is at Hillgrove in Powder Springs. This game will decide the Region 4-AAAAAA championship. In Class AAAAA, powerful Stephenson meets defending AAAAA champion Creekside for the Region 6 title and in other title games in Class AAAAA, it’s Drew at Stockbridge in Region 4 and Dalton at unbeaten Kell in Region 7.

In Class AAAA, Cairo travels to Sylvester to meet Worth County for the Region 1-AAAA championship and Griffin, the defending Class AAAA champions, travel to Eastside of Covington in Region 4-AAAA. In Class AAA, Cedar Grove plays at Blessed Trinity for the title of Region 4, while in Region 1-AAA, there is a play-in format and four games will decide the four region representatives. On Friday, Appling County is at Southeast Bulloch, Dodge County is at Jenkins of Savannah and Beach of Savannah travels to Adel to meet Cook. The Johnson Atom Smashers play at Pierce County on Saturday night in the other region matchup.

Class AA’s top game this week finds Lamar County, last season’s runner up to the Class AA champion Lovett Lions, traveling to Montezuma to meet the improving Macon County Bulldogs for the Region 4-AA championship. In Class A, Emanuel County Institute travels to Savannah to meet Calvary Day School for the Region 3-A title, and Mount Pisgah is at Mount Paran for the trophy in Region 6-A.

The top Class A game this week is a battle of unbeatens in Augusta where Aquinas, the defending Class A private school champions, 9-0, host GHSA newcomer Tattnall Square, 9-0, in a game which will decide the Region 7-A championship. Aquinas features one of the state’s top running backs in Ruben Garnett, while Coach Clint Morgan’s Trojans have been outstanding on defense in their unbeaten run thus far.

Other key games across the state find Jefferson, 9-0, at Hart County, 9-0, in a battle for the 8-AAA crown. Pickens, 8-1, meets Cartersville, 8-1, in a game which will decide the Region 7-AAAA title. In Class 2-AAAAA, Houston County, 8-1, will play host to Northside-Warner Robins, 8-1, in a clash of mid-state rivals at McConnell-Talbert Stadium in Warner Robins.

It is indeed title time in Georgia!
