Region 1-AAAAAA takes a one week respite before starting a two week beat down and back against the wall fight for four state playoff positions. The six team region has seen its share of surprises this season and football fans all across the state will have to wait until October 31 for a few more shocking developments from the region considered by many as the little SEC of high school football in the state. Even though the often-discussed region is idle this week, there is still plenty of action to look at in this week number nine of Georgia prep football action.

In Region 8-AAAAAA, Grayson (8-0, 6-0 in region play) is ranked No. 2 in this week’s Georgia Sportswriters Poll. The Rams travels to Dacula (7-0 overall, 5-0 in region play,) ranked right behind Grayson at No. 3 in the same poll. In addition to the game being a rankings showdown, the winner of this one has the inside track to the region title. However, region foe Archer is right behind the two region leaders at 4-1 and in third place in Region 8-AAAAAA play heading into their meeting this week with Central Gwinnett who is 3-2 in region play. Archer and Central Gwinnett are both 4-3 overall...making It a big week in Region 8-AAAAAA.

In Class AAAAA key games this week, Harris County travels to Columbus to play Carver-Columbus and Warner Robins hosts Lakeside-Evans in a key game in Region 2-AAAAA. Top-ranked Ware County, 7-0 on the year and perfect in Region 3-AAAAA play at 5-0, travels to Statesboro to meet the resurgent Blue Devils, now 2-3 in region play after an 0-5 start to the season.

Class AAAA’s biggest game finds the top-ranked Buford Wolves on the road at North Oconee in Region 8 action while Thomson and Wayne County square off in Jesup for the lead in Region 3-AAAA. In Region 1-AAAA, Americus–Sumter plays at Worth County and the Cairo Syrupmakers meet the Monroe Tornados in key games in the southwest portion of the state.

Class AAA has some key games to play this week as well. Region 1-AAA’s Cook of Adel, 6-2 on the season and 5-0 in region play, is at unbeaten Dodge County (7-0, 4-0 in region play in a key game in Eastman.) The Hornets have won six games in a row after a shaky start to the season. The Indians and Hornets are playing well down the stretch, but Pierce County is still in the hunt at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in sub-region play.

Class AA’s top matchups find defending champion Lovett, 6-2 at Wesleyan, 5-2 in region 6-AA. Pelham is at Fitzgerald in Region 1-AA and Bacon County is at Vidalia in Region 2-AA. In Class A, Claxton, 6-1 overall, is at Calvary Day School, 7-0 in region 3-A . Schley County, 4-3, 3-3, plays at Hawkinsville, 7-1, 6-1, in Region 4-A.

All corners of the state will be jumping this week as all six classifications have great matchups.
