What a Weekend!!!!!

If you are a high school football fan, you saw some great games on GPB over the weekend.
It was virtual cornicopia of blocks and passes, tackles and touchdowns, a real football paloooza.

Things started out Friday with the Single A Private schools championships. Eagles Landing Christian Academy came out on top on a week that head coach Jonathan Guess had a baby boy on Wednesday and won a state title on Friday.

The Triple A Final was a hard hitting back and forth tussle between Buford and St. Pius, with the Wolves winning their ninth state title 10-3.

In the Friday night finale, Gainesville won the first title in Red Elephant history with an impressive win over Ware County.

Now, that was just the beginning. On Saturday we saw ECI win the Single A Public school title.
Then came the upset of the weekend, as Jefferson knocked off top ranked and previously unbeated and defending
champion Calhoun. It was a great moment for Dragons coach T. McFerrin as he picked up career win 318
and his second state championship.

The 4A title game saw the Fighting Patriots of Sandy Creek win its 3rd title in 4 years. And what a exciting way to wrap up the weekend as Norcross rallied back to score 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to beat Lovejoy and
win the 6A Title.

It was great seeing all these athletes and coaches give it their all. There is something pure about high school football in Georgia. Its those Friday night lights, its the afternoon pep rallies, its teams bursting through
the big banners, its the cheerleaders cheering, the bands playing, the parents and grandparents and students
in the stands cheering on their favorites.

I stood up on the podium in the Georgia Dome and watched the runnerup teams, though consumed with disapointment accept their trophy and realize that they had had a sensational season, and a great memory
of playing in the Georgia Dome. And I was there as the 7 winners held their trophies high in the sky and were cheered on by their fans.

I can't wait for next year.
