Jerodis Williams rushed his way to 155 yards and two scores as Furman upset the fourth-ranked Wofford Terriers 26-21 at Paladin Stadium Saturday. Coming off last week’s blowout loss to Georgia Southern, the Paladins came out looking to rebound and they did against a Wofford team that suffered its first Southern Conference loss of the season. Furman (4-3, 3-2) won its second straight overall against the Terriers (5-2, 3-1), and rushed for 208 yards against a defense that had been stellar all season against the run, allowing just 112.7 yards per game on the ground. Eric Breitenstein led Wofford with 129 rushing yards on 24 carries. … The top-ranked Georgia Southern Eagles continued their perfect start to the season, riding a 31-point second quarter and pummeling Presbyterian College 48-14 at Paulson Stadium. The Eagles (7-0, 5-0) once again tallied over 500 yards of total offense with 353 yards coming on the ground. Jerick McKinnon led the ground attack, carrying the ball nine times for 98 yards. After leading 38-0 at the half, the Eagles must have been looking ahead to next week’s road showdown with sixth-ranked Appalachian State, as the starters were pulled and the second-string offense took the remaining snaps in the second half. … Speaking of Appalachian State, the Mountaineers moved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference as they knocked off visiting Samford 35-17 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. After a 21-point outburst in the second quarter, it was smooth sailing for the Mountaineers as they enter next week’s crucial matchup against Georgia Southern. Travaris Cadet and Jamel Jackson combined for five touchdowns for the Mountaineers, while Dustin Taliaferro led the Bulldogs by throwing for 253 yards and a score. … Other Week 8 SoCon action saw The Citadel rack up 435 rushing yards in a 35-7 homecoming victory against Western Carolina. Five different players scored for the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-4), who limited the Catamounts (1-6, 0-5) to 236 yards of total offense. Also from this past weekend, Chattanooga crushed Elon, 42-18, behind 115 rushing yards from Terrell Robinson. ... Looking ahead to Week 9, the marquee matchup between top-ranked Georgia Southern and sixth-ranked Appalachian State takes place at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C. The Mountaineers look to gain momentum in their quest for their seventh-straight conference title, while the Eagles will face their first true test of the season.
