Lady Mary and the Crawleys aren’t the only ones devastated by cousin Matthew’s death. Our hapless yet lovable servant Mr. Molesley has fallen on hard times due to Mr. Crawley’s demise. Molesley was Matthew’s valet. Now that he is gone, Moseley has no employer.

In this preview clip from Episode 2 of Season four, we see just how bad things have gotten.
The once dignified valet has resorted to digging ditches to stay afloat.

“I haven’t earned a penny since Mr. Crawley died and now I owe money all over the village,” Moseley tells an inquiring Anna.

You can view the clip which shows Moseley’s poignant exchange with Anna here shared through the Downton Abbey Addicts blog. It will definitely break your heart.

Season Four of Downton Abbey premiered last Sunday in the U.K. to more than nine million viewers, it’s highest debut there. We’ll have to wait until January 2014 to see whether poor Moseley gets a lifeline through a long lost rich relative. Or maybe the Crawleys can send him to Scotland to serve Robert’s wacky relatives. He's such a good-natured character that it pains my heart to see him down on his luck.

Do you think the Crawley's should do more to help him? Share your thoughts.
