Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood series that brings people together—virtually and in-person—for film screenings and community-driven conversations. Featuring documentaries seen on PBS’s Independent Lens, Indie Lens Pop-Up draws local residents, leaders, and organizations to discuss what matters most, from newsworthy topics and social issues, to family and community relationships.

This latest season started strong with the screening of A Town Called Victoria.  It was held at GPB on December 5th and featured a dynamic community discussion facilitated by two amazing organizations—Out of Hand Theater (of which Equitable Dinners is a part) and Music in Common.  Attendees were divided into small groups and asked to discuss what made a welcoming community, a topic that the participants in the documentary grappled with when their small town was turned upside down when their local mosque was burned down.  After reflecting on community and belonging, the groups were asked to synthesize their responses into a single lyric for the song “We Shall Overcome.”  Led by Trey Carlisle from Music in Common, the group then sang their collective lyrics, forming a song that spoke not only to their shared experiences of the evening, but also to a larger hope for a welcoming and loving community for all.

Each Indie Lens Pop-Up event shares a unique experience with attendees as they explore how the larger themes within the film affect them and their communities personally.  Our next event Indie Lens event will be on January 28 and will feature the film Razing Liberty Square.  For more information on this screening, and to find all upcoming events, visit our Community Page.
