Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who is running for governor, debated an empty podium Monday during the Atlanta Press Club runoff debates while his opponent, healthcare businessman Rick Jackson, campaigned in Kennesaw, northwest of Atlanta.
Jones criticized Jackson for declining the debate invitation, held at GPB in Midtown Atlanta.
"In order to be taken serious, you need to show up and show people that you care, No. 1, and that you appreciate what they're doing for you," Jones said.
Meanwhile, Jackson instead held a campaign event with Florida U.S. Sen. Rick Scott and took the opportunity to take shots at Jones.
"This race is between an outsider and an insider," Jackson told the crowd at his event. "Burt Jones is the insider's pick."
Both candidates promised to address the high cost of living and cut taxes. They also both promoted their experience in business.
The runoff will be held on June 16, and early voting starts June 8. The winner of the runoff will face Democratic nominee and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in November..
