It’s been a week since the Brantley County fire started, and firefighters are still struggling to get the blaze under control.

On Sunday, the fire spread north across Ga. Highway 32, previously a safe evacuation route, and jumped over several surface streets, threatening the nearby areas of Fendig and Browntown.

Brantley County Manager Joey Cason said crews are starting structural assessments in those areas.

"It's a tragic loss and their hearts are so heavy, I can't tell you," he said. "We all just wanted to cry last night. It's heartbreaking. This whole situation is heartbreaking."

Brantley County is currently under a mandatory curfew from 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. while emergency crews try to contain the fire.
