LISTEN: Ahead of the World Cup Atlanta leaders announced a new hub for arts and creativity downtown. GPB’s Amanda Andrews has more on how the ATL Culture House will highlight local creators.
Ahead of the World Cup Atlanta leaders announced the ATL Culture House, a new venue highlighting local arts and creativity downtown.
The creative hub will occupy nearly 23,000 square feet inside the former CNN Center. It will include a performance stage, exhibition spaces, and vendors.
The ATL Culture House is a collaboration between Showcase Atlanta, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.
The venue will host eight days of arts programming throughout June and July: half created by the city and the rest from selected local artists.
OCA executive director Adriane Jefferson said the office received over 400 proposals from across Atlanta.
"This shows what it means, how this is resonating, and what it means to Atlanta creatives to have a space that really represents them, and also that they have a voice that they want to see reflected authentically," she said.
Bem Joyner is the co-founder of Atlanta Influences Everything. He said ATL Culture House can build on the creative exchanges that are already happening.
"A lot of times, without space and place, the cultural exchange happens via like the Instagram marketplace or something like that," he said. "So what this place — physical space and places been able to do — or what we're hoping — is that it creates this opportunity for physical cultural exchange."
This arts hub follows a state push to support cultural development in Georgia. Gov. Brian Kemp recently signed a bill creating a Georgia Music Office.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said he’s encouraged by the new office, especially given Atlanta’s long musical history.
"Now that's going to be there," he said. "Which should hopefully lead to production tax credits so the producers, the writers, etc., can get a little love on doing your productions and videos and things in Atlanta, just as film and TV productions got discounts."
Events will include live performances, artist panels, film screenings, and youth workshops. The first event will take place June 14. A Full list of performances will be on the ATL Culture House website.
