After northern Georgia was affected by the winter storm, which brought freezing rain, sleet and snow, now officials are warning of dangerously frigid temperatures.

A cold weather advisory has been declared through 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Gov. Brian Kemp-declared a state of emergency is through Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026.

State officials advise:

  • WHAT: Very cold wind chills from 5 below to 5 above across much of North Georgia and 5 to 15 degrees across central Georgia.
  • WHERE: Portions of central, east central, north central, northeast, northwest, southeast, and west central Georgia.
  • WHEN: From 8 p.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday.
  • IMPACTS: Very cold wind chills from 5 below to 5 above zero in North Georgia and 5 to 15 above in central Georgia are expected. Avoid prolonged exposure if possible and have a safe heating source, particularly for those who may still be experiencing power outages.

Use caution while traveling outside, officials said. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat and gloves, and make frequent checks on older family, friends and neighbors.

Ensure that portable heaters are used correctly, and do not use generators or grills inside.

To prevent water pipes from freezing, wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly.
