UPDATES: The federal government shutdown continues to affect Georgians. Here's what to know
Primary Content
On Oct. 1, the federal government shut down for the first time in nearly seven years after Congress failed to pass appropriations bills to fund federal programs.
The entire nation has been affected by the shutdown, from federal jobs and air traffic control to national parks, food aid programs, Social Security benefits and more.
Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been furloughed and sent home without pay until Congress resumes funding.
The state of Georgia has about 111,000 federal workers. For them, the shutdown marks another difficult moment in a difficult year of downsizing and administrative upheaval.
And while a Nov. 9 U.S. Senate vote moved through that chamber, a vote from the U.S. House remains, so the shutdown endures.
GPB is reporting from across the state on the effects felt in Georgia as the federal government is not funded.
