Laboratories in the United States quit performing experiments on chimpanzees over a decade ago. But chimps can live a long time, which means there are a lot of chimps in labs who still need a place to retire.

That’s why the Project Chimps refuge near Blue Ridge exists: to provide a space where animals which may have only ever known an indoor enclosure the chance to see trees, grass and blue skies.

But before that can happen, people like Project Chimps behaviorist Kris Dyer have to make sure new chimps on the block know how to get along with the old-timers.
