Atlanta housing leaders have cut the ribbon on a new senior housing redevelopment in East Lake. The project marks a major milestone on the road to Mayor Andre Dickens' goal of creating or preserving 20,000 units of affordable housing by 2030.

Dickens said the renovation of the Legacy at East Lake apartments places the city at 11,000 units of affordable housing. All 149 units in the complex will be made affordable for seniors 55 and at different levels based on area median income.

Atlanta Housing CEO Terri Lee said their goal is to welcome people who have been priced out back into the community.

“That is the promise and the opportunity: to be able to say that as we develop the city, as we developed new affordable housing units, we are developing it for the persons who have labored and have been in these communities for years to come,” Lee said.

Funding for the project was provided by Truist Bank, Invest Atlanta, Atlanta Housing, and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

Carmen Chubb is President of Columbia Residential, the lead developer on the project. She said partnerships are important to transform the community.

“Legacy at East Lake demonstrates what’s possible when public and private partners work together to ensure our seniors have housing, they can afford with access to an array of neighborhood amenities,” Chubb said.

In addition to the infrastructure improvements, Legacy at East Lake will partner with Matter Health to provide residents with access to convenient, in-home preventive care services.
