A Southwest Atlanta road improvement project is being fast tracked after complaints from area businesses and residents.

Cascade Heights residents have been outspoken about the slow pace of construction on Cascade Road hurting businesses and costing locals money.

Now the Atlanta Department of Transportation has construction crews on Cascade Road working two 12-hour shifts a day through Aug. 16. The plan is to finish the redesign including new pavement and temporary striping to move the project along more quickly.

ATLDOT Commissioner Solomon Caviness said this final push is a major milestone.

“Cascade will be more livable corridor from Kingsdale all the way to Ralph David Abernathy," Caviness said. "We have resurfaced. We will have trails and sidewalks along the corridor.”

Atlanta City Councilmember Marci Collier Overstreet represents the area. She said the work is closer to wrapping up.

“I do believe we are finally headed to the finish line, thank goodness,” she said. “The actual community has come out and been really vocal about the inconvenience of it all.”

During a city council meeting last week Cascade road business owners said they’re facing mounting debt because construction is preventing customers from visiting their shops.

Construction originally scheduled for completion in December is now set to be done by the end of the month.
