Savannah Voice Festival

Paprika Southern co-editor Bevin Valentine Jalbert and Savannah Master Calendar publisher Scott West offer up some ways to have fun in the Savannah area this weekend.

Bevin’s picks:

-See some of the best the Telfair Museums’ collection has to offer with an exhibit of prints, running now through next July at the Telfair Academy. The exhibit features etchings, lithographs, and wood engravings by the likes of Rembrandt, Cezanne, Goya and others - as well as a special section focused on the south.

-Enjoy a night out while your kids have fun at Scribble Art Studio’s kids club, at the Pooler studio. Drop kids off for a screening of Frozen, pizza and a craft based on the movie. Saturday, 6-9 p.m.; $30 per child, $20 each for siblings.

-Brush up on your sci-fi bona fides with Sulfur Studios’ presentation of Solaris. The 1972 movie from Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky takes a more introspective approach to science fiction than most films, and it’s considered a classic of the genre. Sunday, 7 p.m.; $5.

Scott’s picks:

-Give summer one last hurrah before school starts with not one but two YMCA parties. First, combine water safety with fun, games and music at the West Broad Street YMCA’s Splash Bash. Friday, 3-5 p.m.; $2. Then, the Habersham YMCA’s annual Luau features live music, great food and prizes for the best Luau attire. Friday, 5-7 p.m.; free.

-Check out the desert drag queen adventure Priscilla, Queen of the Desert at the Lucas Theatre - and support Savannah’s first LGBT community center. The film follows a group of drag queens as they travel through the Australian desert on their way to Sydney. Friday, 7:30 p.m.; $16.

-Saturday is your last chance to adopt a large breed dog from Savannah-Chatham Animal Control for a reduced fee. It’s the end of their Big Mutt campaign, for which the shelter reduced fees on dogs 49 pounds and over to just $50. Be sure to wear close-toed shoes. The shelter is open 1-4:30 p.m.

-The Savannah Voice Festival kicks off at the Westin on Sunday with Death, by Aria Part I. The event offers an up-close look at the festival to come and a chance to enjoy great music and meet the season’s artists in a casual cafe setting. Sunday, 4 p.m.; $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

-Hear the latest work from Savannah native author Yvonne Shinhoster Lamb at her reading at the Beach Institute on Sunday. She’ll be sharing work from her new e-book My Soul Rhythms: Prayer Stories to Ignite your Spirit. Sunday, 4-6 p.m.
