Georgia and a dozen other states are challenging a new rule that gives federal authorities jurisdiction over some state waters.

They’ve filed suit against the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers over the so-called “Waters of the US” rule.

Federal officials say it’s meant to clarify which wetlands, streams and other waterways are protected under the Clean Water Act.

But Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens says it’s “federal overreach on steroids.” He says everything from roadside ditches to farm ponds could be subject to regulation.

Olens and other attorneys-general want a judge to declare the rule illegal and prevent the EPA from enforcing it.

Environmental groups say they’ll file briefs opposing the suit.
