A lawyer for a former University of Georgia police officer says he will file a $5 million lawsuit against the state Board of Regents after he says his client was fired for trying to uphold a new medical amnesty law.

WAGA-TV reports Jay Park refused to arrest two underage UGA students last month after a resident adviser called 911 to help an intoxicated student. The law, enacted last year, says anyone who seeks medical help for an overdose cannot be charged with an alcohol or drug offense.

WAGA-TV reports Park had previously contacted state lawmakers to clarify the intent of the law after a supervisor told him to arrest a student in a similar incident. University officials said Park was fired because he was repeatedly insubordinate.
