College Football signing day

Today is the day that all high school athletes dream about. Today, all over the state of Georgia and the country for that matter, high school players are signing letters of intent to play collegiately at the next level.

Signing Day has become a kind of happening…..where is this kid going? Will he sign on the dotted line? Will some other coach and program swoop in at the last minute and steal away the future?

Yes, there is plenty of drama on Signing Day and when the dust finally clears, the football programs around the country have restocked their talent supplies and are already working on the signing class for 2016.

I enjoy signing day. Yes, it’s a little hokey, with some kid with five hats with his final five school logos on them and finally selecting his school. A few years ago Isaiah Crowell walked in carrying a bulldog puppy as he selected the University of Georgia. When Trent Thompson announced for Georgia, he played the school fight songs of the top 3 before deciding to play for the Bulldogs. Today, Roquan Smith of Macon County, the number 2 ranked linebacker in the country did a game show theme, with his final 5 schools logos on place cards in front of him. It came down to UCLA and Georgia and Roquan ducked under the table for what seemed to be forever before popping back up wearing blue and gold gloves and declaring his intention to play for coach Jim Mora and UCLA.

If the kids want to have a little fun, I say, let them have a little fun. They have worked hard for this day. But the day really belongs to the parents who have raised these kids, taken them to practices, gone to their pep rallies, supported them at their games, cheered them on, encouraged them during the down times and guided them through the recruiting process. I always enjoy seeing the vision of true joy on these parent’s faces as their son signs on the dotted line. They are proud, they are happy and as I tell them all, YOU have done your job in preparing your son for this day. So congratulations to all the signees and to all the folks in their families that have helped them reach this milestone day. GREAT
