Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

Connect Savannah Arts and Entertainment Editor Anna Chandler and Savannah Morning News Film Scene columnist Jim Reed offer some can’t-miss events in Savannah this weekend.

Anna’s picks:

-Beloved local band Cusses will celebrate five years of playing great tunes and promoting Savannah’s music scene with a show at the Jinx on Friday. In classic Cusses form, the show will feature up-and-coming local acts as well: Wet Socks and Crazy Bag Lady. Friday, 10 p.m.

-Meanwhile, Train Wrecks - often called Savannah’s hardest-working band - will play two shows this weekend. On Friday they’ll launch the vinyl edition of their new album at Graveface Records. Then on Saturday they too will play the Jinx, along with American Hologram. Friday, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, 10 p.m.

-The Savannah Philharmonic will perform Haydn’s masterpiece oratorio “The Creation” on Saturday at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in downtown Savannah. The evocative work draws on the Bible books Genesis and Psalms and Milton’s “Paradise Lost” for its interpretation of the creation of the world. Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; $18-100.

Jim’s picks:

-It’s Tarantino weekend in Savannah, with a number of acclaimed director’s films available to see on the big screen. First, catch Pulp Fiction at the Trustees Theater on Thursday. Then the Lucas Theatre will present two films each night: Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained on Friday and Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 on Saturday. Thursday, 8 p.m.; $8. Friday and Saturday, 7 and 10 p.m.; $8 general, $5 senior/student/military, $20 four-film pass.

-Cinema Savannah will present a rare U.S. screening of the Polish film “To Love” at Muse Arts Warehouse on Friday. Not a romantic comedy despite what the title might suggest, this intense and often dark film has fetched awards at film festivals around the world. Friday, 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.; $5

-Looking ahead to next week, Jim’s group the Psychotronic Film Society will celebrate the birthday of horror filmmaker George A. Romero. Romero is known for “Night of the Living Dead” and other horror classics, but this screening will be a lesser-known film - and the title won’t be revealed until the movie starts playing. Wednesday, 8 p.m.; $7.
