New Georgia State School Superintendent

Republican Richard Woods was sworn in today in a ceremony at the Capitol.

Woods worked s a teacher and administrator in Irwin County for more than 20 years.

He is opposed to Common Core standards and says local districts should be given more flexibility in how they spend state and federal money. When it comes to standardized tests, he says to use test scores to help students succeed.

"Really since No Child Left Behind, we've been really test driven, and the testing is really what has driven the education system and not the child,” says Woods. “As an administrator, one of the things I always found out is that one of the things that was always talked about was the test, the test, test. Well, what we forgot to talk about was the child."

Woods spoke on GPB's 9 a.m. talk show, On Second Thought.
