Jail Mail Goes ‘Postcards Only’

Authorities say inmates at the Troup County Jail can no longer receive enveloped letters from loved ones.

The policy went into effect Saturday.

Sheriff's Sgt. Chad Mann said the policy change is an effort to decrease the amount of contraband sent to inmates in the mail. He said items ranging from drugs to money have been smuggled into the jail through the mail.

Under the new policy, mail sent to an inmate in an envelope will be returned to the sender with a note explaining the change.
