Sight Recognition
In this Literacy Short, the focus is on the “sight recognition” strand of Scarborough’s Reading Rope. Instead of memorizing fixed lists of sight words, students should learn to recognize words based on their regular and irregular spelling patterns. High-frequency words, like "the" or "is," are especially important to know automatically, and some of these may be irregularly spelled.

Instead of memorizing fixed lists of sight words, students should learn to recognize words based on their regular and irregular spelling patterns. High-frequency words, like "the" or "is," are especially important to know automatically, and some of these may be irregularly spelled. The “heart words” method helps students identify which parts of a word are fully decodable and which must be remembered “by heart.” This approach builds stronger, more flexible reading skills than rote memorization alone.
