Graduation is approaching, and seniors are preparing to take different paths after high school. Some plan to attend college, others are considering military service, and some intend to enter the workforce. These decisions are influenced by a variety of experiences students have during their time in school. 

High school provides students with access to different classes, programs, and activities that can contribute to their future. Academic courses, career and technical education programs, and extracurricular activities all offer opportunities for students to develop skills and explore interests. These experiences can play a role in how students decide what they want to do after graduation.

Students who plan to attend college often take courses that help them build study habits, manage their time, and prepare for a more independent learning environment. Advanced classes and dual enrollment opportunities can also give students a preview of college-level work. 

As student Michelle Hughes explained, “I decided to attend college after graduation because I want to pursue a career in research, and that's something that's pretty hard to do without going through a college or university first.”

For students considering military service, high school can help them recognize whether a traditional classroom setting fits their learning style while also building discipline and responsibility. Some students are also drawn to the military because it provides structure, career opportunities, and financial benefits. 

This connection is seen in student Larry Miller’s choice, “High school made me go to the Navy due to the fact that I realized I'm not much of a school person, and it still allows me to continue my career without having to do the expenses of college.”

For students entering the workforce, high school experiences can help them realize that they prefer hands-on learning and practical work. Through classes, projects, or jobs outside of school, some students decide that gaining experience right away is the best path for them.

Student Jessica Kirkland described coming to this decision, saying, “High school helped me realize that college just wasn't going to be for me and that the workforce would be a better option for me.”

Although seniors choose different paths, high school can offer a range of experiences that prepare them for life after graduation. The skills and knowledge gained during this time may influence how students approach their next steps.
