Besides your favorite hot beverage and your knitting project for our All Creatures Great and Small Knit-Along, your GPB Passport account will be your trusty companion in making it through the cold winter days in Georgia. For those who have already begun their projects (or donated their projects already), we thank you for giving back to those in need in our community.

However, it’s not too late to join! If you’re an experienced or novice knitter or crocheter alike, your Georgia neighbors can use your help. We encourage you to read up on this year’s Knit-Along initiative on our blog, and we have answers to some of your frequently asked questions behind the initiative.

  • What items are most in need?

According to our partner Needle Nook, our most-needed items are hats, scarves, cowls and mitts/handwarmers. We encourage you to reference this handout that Needle Nook put together for our All Creatures Great and Small screening in January.

Now, with your knitting needles in hand (or the aforementioned hot drink), here’s a few series we at GPB think are excellent to binge while you craft, sip or simply relax during the season.

The Durrells in Corfu

If you’re an All Creatures fan and you’ve yet to embark on the adventures of the Durrell family, make The Durrells in Corfu your next binge watch. Set on the island of Corfu in the 1930s, The Durrells in Corfu is adapted from Gerald Durrell’s memoirs and stars Keeley Hawes (Miss Austen) as matriarch Louisa Durrell, an intrepid widow who uproots her family from England to sun-drenched Greece. Featuring plenty of fauna befriended by eleven-year-old Gerry (Milo Parker), who grew up to become a world-renowned naturalist, The Durrells in Corfu contains plenty of heart, coming-of-age and reckoning with a world on the brink of war. All Creatures fans should watch for second son Leslie Durrell, an impulsive firearms enthusiast, played by Callum Woodhouse, better known as Tristan Farnon: this is where he got his start on MASTERPIECE.

Mr. Selfridge

A world away and several decades before The Durrells, Harry Gordon Selfridge was making his mark on London’s retail scene and transformed how people shop, setting trends that continue in retail today. Mr. Selfridge stars Jeremy Piven as the titular character who moves his family from America to England to create the retail giant we know today, Selfridge’s. Flush with style and scandal, Mr. Selfridge is a visual delight, a history lesson and a cautionary tale all in one. Plenty of familiar faces appear throughout the series, including Amanda Abbington (Sherlock) as Josie Mardle, Grégory Fitoussi (Beecham House) as Henri Leclair and both Samuel West and Anna Madeley from All Creatures Great and Small as Frank Edwards and Irene Ravilious, respectively.

Beecham House

Taking place in late 18th Century India, Beecham House tells the story of an enigmatic former soldier of the East India Company who has purchased the titular mansion in Delhi in order to raise a family and uncover political corruption as Britain, France and India themselves vie to rule the region ahead of Britain’s eventual takeover. Tom Bateman (Funny Woman) stars as John Beecham, alongside Dakota Blue Richards (Endeavour), Leo Suter (SanditonVictoria), Lesley Nicol (Downton Abbey) and Marc Warren (Van der Valk). While the sumptuous show does end on a cliffhanger after one season, it’s worth a watch for the beautiful sets and costumes, romantic intrigue and scandal and for the likes of Nicol and Warren, who play characters who are vastly different from their Downton and Van der Valk counterparts.

Little Women

A cozy, comforting take on a classic American novel, the MASTERPIECE production of Little Women received many accolades and praise from critics and fans alike when it first premiered. Told over the course of three episodes, Little Women features Academy Award nominee Emily Watson, Michael Gambon (Churchill’s Secret), Academy Award winner Angela Lansbury, Jonah Hauer-King (World on Fire), and stars Maya Hawke as Jo March, well before she ventured to Hawkins, Indiana to appear as Robin Buckley on Stranger Things (which was filmed throughout the state of Georgia, by the way!).

Anne of Green Gables

If you’re going to delve into Louisa May Alcott’s famous story of four sisters, you shouldn’t leave out Lucy Maud Montgomery’s equally notorious coming of age story of Anne Shirley, a precocious young orphan plucked from an orphanage and placed in the home of Marilla Cuthbert and her brother, Matthew. Throughout three films, Anne (Ella Ballentine) navigates school, friendships, family and first love in the fictional Avonlea, set in Prince Edward Island in the early 20th Century.

The Trouble with Maggie Cole

When a journalist interviews Maggie Cole, the self-appointed ‘oracle’ of the close-knit fishing village of Thurlbury about the area’s history, Maggie drunkenly shares juicy gossip on local radio about six villagers with secrets. While she deeply regrets her actions, some of the allegations hold grains of truth, setting up the series for an array of confrontations and reckonings with plenty of humor in-between. The Trouble With Maggie Cole is easily bingeable as viewers can’t wait to see what happens to Maggie during the fallout of her scandalous interview, and with the likes of Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley) in the titular role, you know you’re in for plenty of laugh out loud moments.

Around the World in 80 Days

In MASTERPIECE’s adaptation of the classic adventure novel by Jules Verne, Around the World in 80 Days follows wealthy Victorian eccentric Phileas Fogg and his determination to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days in a hot air balloon. He’s joined on his quest by Jean Passepartout, his irrepressible valet, and Abigail “Fix” Fortescue, a headstrong journalist. The trio is thwarted by Nyle Bellamy, Fogg’s rival, as they attempt to win the monetary bet made between Fogg and Bellamy. While this series only lasted for one season, it’s packed with beautiful landscapes and plenty of action. Fogg, played by David Tennant, is also a highlight of the show, especially for fans who have loved his work in Doctor Who and Broadchurch, to name a few.

Funny Woman

In 1960s England, Barbara Parker has just been crowned Miss Blackpool but she’s sure there’s more to life than being a beauty queen. Instead, she’s drawn to the bright lights and film stages of London, and packs her bags determined to take the male-dominated industry of TV sitcoms by storm. Along the way she meets colleagues, friends and lovers, takes on the stage name Sophie Straw and navigates the ups and downs of fame while fulfilling her dreams. Eagle-eyed drama fans will appreciate Gemma Arterton as Barbara Parker, but will also recognize Tom Bateman from Beecham House and Matthew Beard from Vienna Blood and Magpie Murders, all available to stream on Passport.

Alan Cumming’s Most Luxurious Train Journeys Scotland

Journey into the part of the U.K. that a young James Wight, better known as the man behind James Herriot, grew up. Climb aboard one of the most luxurious trains in the world with host Alan Cumming as he takes viewers on the Royal Scotsman in this four-episode series, exploring both the ins and outs of how the train and its staff operate as well as the Scottish roots, history and people that make Scotland unique.

The Best of The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross

If you don’t want to craft alone while knitting or crocheting, try creating art with everyone’s favorite television painter. For years, Bob Ross has relaxed viewers and encourages hobbyists using his “wet-on-wet” technique, painting natural scenes on canvas. We suggest pairing episodes featuring wintry scenes, explained by Ross’ calm disposition, with your yarn projects, perhaps envisioning them being used in Georgia on the state’s most frigid days. Don’t be afraid to create your own happy little accidents with your knitting needles: try a new stitch or a color combination you haven’t tried before. You might just love it, and a Georgia neighbor will certainly appreciate it once your project is complete and donated.

We hope this guide helps build your Passport playlist this winter. And of course, you can always knit along to an All Creatures Great and Small marathon: all six seasons are available to stream now.
