Drawing through grief: The Atlanta cartoonist who captured the nation after 9/11
Primary Content
The 25th anniversary of 9/11. A moment forever etched into our collective national psyche. For most of us, we were witness to the tragedy via television.
Two-time Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal Constitution has a long, extraordinary body of work since arriving here in 1989. The celebrated journalist artist will always be remembered for his searing work after 9/11. Mike recently sat down with me while taping a segment for GPB’s "Georgia Legends." He spoke of the horror he experienced at home that day in September, 25 years ago, watching the tragedy unfold with his family and struggling to channel his emotions into his newspaper work.
"Normally, I try and use humor as a means of getting across my point but after September 11th you couldn't use humor. The tragedy was enormous. I was trying to come up with images that expressed the emotions I was feeling."
The trajectory of the country, as well as the artist was altered by the events of a New York City September blue morning a quarter of a century ago.
