Shake-up comes in Private Class where Prince Avenue Christian becomes the New No. 1
Primary Content
It was a relatively “normal” week in the GPB Sports high school football rankings with a few new teams (five in the eight Top 10 rankings) and some moderate movement through the various Top 10s, but the biggest story came in the Private Class.
Familiar with the No. 1 ranking, Prince Avenue Christian finds itself back on top with Holy Innocents moving into the No. 2 spot. Previous No. 1 Calvary Day dropped to No. 3 with former No. 2 Greater Atlanta Christian sliding to fifth. Hebron Christian moved back into fourth. In all, the top five spots in the Private Class changed hands in one way or another.
This all started with Calvary Day suffering its first loss of the season 28-14 at Ambassador Christian (Huntersville, North Carolina). This set the stage for a new number one when previous No. 3 Prince Avenue defeated previous No. 2 GAC 38-15 in Bogart, dropping the Spartans to fifth behind Hebron. The Lions inched up to the four-spot ahead of their big game at 3A No. 3 Hart County this coming Friday night.
Several previously ranked teams found their way back into the rankings, North Cobb No. 10 in 7A, Langston Hughes No. 10 in 6A, Oconee County No. 10 in 3A and Wesleyan No. 9 in Private.
Here are the five new teams in this week’s rankings:
No. 8 Dalton in 5A. The Catamounts are 4-0 in Coach Chris Prewett’s second season in the “Carpet Capital of the World.” The former Roswell coach has done an incredible job of restoring the Dalton program after it had gone 3-18 in the last two seasons.
Both Lumpkin and Franklin County are new to the 3A rankings. Both teams are 3-0. Lumpkin had gone 13-11 the last two seasons after reaching the 2023 State Quarterfinals. Including this season’s 3-0 start, Franklin is 10-6 in their last 16 games dating back to last season after going 7-35 the previous four seasons (2021-24).
Commerce is new to the 2A rankings at No. 10. Coach Lenny Gregory has the Tigers off to a 3-0 start after going 2-8 in his first season. Gregory is perhaps best known for leading Collins Hill to the 2021 state championship with a player named Travis Hunter in a starring role. Perhaps you remember him?
The other new team to the rankings is Treutlen checking in at No. 10 in 1A. The Vikings are also off to a 3-0 start. Treutlen went 6-5 last season but prior to that had not had a winning record since 2016, have not made the playoffs since 2009 and have never won a state playoff game in the program’s 69-year history. So maybe this will be the year for the boys from Soperton.
