GHSA Basketball Day 2: Unbeaten St. Pius wins first state title

The St. Pius boys won the first state championship in school history and finished as the state’s only unbeaten team and Marist star Kate Harpring wrapped up her career with her second state title to highlight Day 2 of the GHSA State Basketball Championships at the Macon Coliseum.
The Clinch County boys won their first title in 37 years and the Wilcox County girls made it back-to-back titles.
The schedule for Friday is:
Class A Division 1: Girls – Elbert County vs. East Laurens, 1 p.m.; Boys – Southwest Macon vs. Rabun County, 3 p.m. Coed 3-point contest: 4:45. Class 5A: Girls – Milton vs. Creekview, 5:30 p.m.; Boys – Alexander vs. Woodward Academy, 7:30 p.m.

Here’s a look at Thursday’s championships.
Class 4A girls: Marist 58, Kell 50
Kate Harpring scored 40 points to lead Marist to its second state championship in three years. Harpring was 15-for-25 from the field, 10-for-19 from the line, with 16 rebounds and three steals in her final game.
The War Eagles (29-2) led 15-3 after the first quarter and held off a spirited Kell comeback. Marist also got 13 points from Emily Morrison.
Kell (25-6) was led by Asiah Thompson with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals, Kennedy Deese with 10 points 13 rebounds, and Lyric Watson with 10 points and six rebounds.
Class 4A boys: St. Pius 54, Pace Academy 51
Clemson signee Harris Reynolds scored 23 points and had nine rebounds to help the Golden Lions finish 33-0 and win the school’s first state championship.
St. Pius guard Westin Keppen scored 13 points, including a big 3-point that broke a tie and put the Golden Lions ahead with seconds remaining.
Pace Academy (24-8) got 19 points from Jaydon Avery, 11 points and 14 rebounds from Hayden Clay, and 10 points and seven rebounds from Gavin Fountain.
Class A Division 2 girls: Wilcox County 48, Washington-Wilkes 39
Tyliah Benjamin scored 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked five shots and had three steals to help Wilcox County win its second straight state championship.
Wilcox County (28-1) algo got 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals from Shamauri Martin and eight rebounds each from Lezlee Roberts and Zariah Martin.
Washington-Wilkes (21-8) was led by Samaria Young with 15 points and six rebounds.
Class A Division 2 boys: Clinch County 63, Portal 43
Sophomore Traviian Miller scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Clinch County to its first state championship since 1989.
Clinch County (29-3) also got 15 points and seven rebounds from Jakyri Posely and 10 points from Kamarion Johnson.
Portal (26-6) was led by David Thomas with 16 points and six rebounds and K.J. Hunter with 10 points and six rebounds.
