The GHSA state playoffs kick off tonight on GPB Sports Football Fridays in Georgia with a terrific North/South Class 6A first-round showdown as the 8th-ranked Colquitt County Packers travel north from Moultrie to take on the Mill Creek Hawks.

These two teams are very accustomed to playing big games against each other. This will be the fifth all-time meeting with the Packers leading the series 3-1. This will be the third time these two have met in the state playoffs with the other two coming in the Corky Kell/Dave Hunter Classic.

Colquitt has been a thorn in the Hawks’ side. In 2010 the Packers beat Mill Creek 27-14 in the quarterfinals to end what at the time was the Hawks best season ever. The Packers would advance to the state final before falling to Brookwood.

The stakes were even higher when they met again in the 2015 semifinal as the Packers came to Hoschton and won 52-31 ending, again at the time was, the Hawks best season ever at 13-1. Colquitt would go to cap their second straight 15-0 season with a second consecutive state title while also being crowned national champions.

Mill Creek would get their only win in the series eight months later beating the Packers 34-27 in the 2016 Corky Kell/Dave Hunter Classic and that was the last time these two teams played, nine years ago -- until tonight. Since then the Hawks have won their own state championship, that coming in 2022, with a memorable team led by the spectacular Caleb Downs who is now starring for the No. 1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.

Here in 2025, the Packers finished the regular season 8-2 and as co-champions out of Region 1 with a league record of 4-1. Colquitt County finished in a three-way tie for first with Valdosta and Lowndes but wound-up as the No. 3 seed out of the region based on tiebreakers. The Packers actually beat No. 1 seed Valdosta 18-17 but lost at No. 2 seed Lowndes 31-14.

Colquitt County is the poster child for how radically different the GHSA Playoffs will be next season when teams are seeded 1-32 based on the mathematically-based  PSR (post-season rankings). In that format the Packers would have been the No. 6 seed in the state and instead of facing a playoff path entirely on the road (which they are under the current format) would be hosting teams the first two rounds (provided they won in the first round) and hosting a team not nearly as formidable as Mill Creek.

In the current format Colquitt faces at least an 8-hour round trip including an overnight stay to play Mill Creek. If they beat the Hawks, the same itinerary awaits in all likelihood the following week against Grayson (No. 1 GPB 6A Top 10) ranked No. 2 in the country in the USA Today Super 25. And all this for a team that is ranked by the GHSA as the sixth-best team in Georgia. Like I’ve said many times before, the PSR format won’t be perfect but it is imminently better than the current.

As for Mill Creek, the Hawks went 7-3 in the regular season and finished second behind Buford in Region 8-6A at 5-1. Mill Creek lost to Buford 35-3 in their last game two weeks ago. Buford is ranked No. 2 in the GPB 6A Top 10 and ranked No. 7 in the  USA Today national rankings. Mill Creek also lost to fourth-ranked North Gwinnett and Norcross early in the season (Coach Josh Lovelady said they played like “The Bad News Bears” that night they lost to the Blue Devils). The Bulldogs are the one common opponent for Colquitt and Mill Creek and they both lost on the road at North Gwinnett by a 21-7 score.

Packers Coach Sean Calhoun said tonight’s game with the Hawks is more like a quarterfinal playoff game rather than a first rounder and we think he’s right. That’s why we will be there to show it to you this evening.

So should be a lot of fun! Always is when these two teams meet. That’s the game preview. Now here’s the Top Prospects to Watch.
