Week 10: Five Games to Watch
Primary Content
A Cobb County neighborhood rivalry will take center stage for GPB’s Football Fridays in Georgia broadcast and this year the competition between Hillgrove and McEachern has more than just bragging rights on the line. It could decide the region championship.
No. 5 McEachern and No. 10 Hillgrove are both 7-0 overall and are 4-0 in Region 4-6A play. Kickoff from Cobb Energy Hillgrove Stadium will be at 7:30 p.m. The game will be shown on GPB-TV and streamed live at GPB.org.
A McEachern victory would almost ensure the Indians of their 21st region championship; they finish the season with South Cobb and Osborne, who each have one win. The Indians have emerged as an offensive juggernaut and have scored 159 points over the last three games.
A Hillgrove win would give the Hawks a chance to clinch its first region title since 2018 if they can beat Harrison next week. Hillgrove has been a dominant defensive team this season; it has allowed only 13 points and posted five shutouts – including their last four games.
Hillgrove leads the series 8-7 and won last year’s game 30-23.
Troup County at LaGrange: A pair of state-ranked teams meet in this Class 3A showdown that will help determine the top seeds from Region 2. No. 6-ranked Troup County is 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the league. No. 5-ranked LaGrange is 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the league, the loss coming to No. 1-ranked Sandy Creek. (Troup plays Sandy Creek in the last game of the season.)
This game will be GPB’s Stream Game and can be seen live on GPB.org or
Northgate at Hughes: Two of the top teams in Class 5A square off to help determine who will win the Region 3 championship. No. 9 Northgate and No. 2 Hughes are both 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the region; both still have games remaining with Lovejoy, which is also 7-0 and 4-0.
Hughes, under first-year coach Andrico Hines, has been an offensive machine. The Panthers average 47.3 points per game and have not really been tested all season.
Northgate, under second-year coach Kevin Whitley, doesn’t have the same gaudy numbers, but have put up 37.8 points over the last five games. The Vikings opened with close wins over Starr’s Mill and Villa Rica and have not been challenged since.
Northgate leads the series 4-1, but Hughes won last year’s game 46-0.
Westside-Augusta at Harlem: Another big showdown in Class 3A, where Westside (7-0, 5-0) and Harlem (6-1, 4-1) are vying for the Region 4 championship. Harlem’s only loss is to No. 9 West Laurens; Westside finishes its season against West Laurens. Harlem leads the series 11-6, including the last five. Harlem won last year’s game 24-0.
Elbert County at Athens Academy: Elbert County (4-4, 4-0) and Athens Academy (7-1, 4-0) are in a battle for first place in Region 8 Class A Div. 1 with Rabun County. The three teams all play each other over the final weeks of the regular season. Elbert and Athens met for the first time a year ago, with Athens Academy winning 35-34 at the Granite Bowl.
