Marist football coach Alan Chadwick moved a step closer toward reaching a record that was thought to be unattainable. Chadwick became only the second coach in Georgia to reach 450 wins when his War Eagles defeated North Springs 43-0 on Friday.

Alan Chadwick has won 450 games in 41 seasons at Marist.

Chadwick is now 450-82 with 23 region championships and three state championships in 41 seasons and trails only Larry Campbell, Georgia’s winningest all-time coach. Campbell was 477-85-3 at Lincoln County. Chadwick could conceivably catch Campbell in 2027, if he remains active.

“In a lot of ways it’s just another ball game,” Chadwick told WSB-TV afterwards. “It’s nice to get that record or whatever it is, but tonight wasn’t about a number, it wasn’t about me it’s about this group of kids.”

It was also a memorable weekend for Elbert County coach Andy Dyer and the Newnan football program.

Dyer notched the 100th win of his career on Friday when the Blue Devils defeated Providence Christian 43-9. Newnan defeated Dutchtown 38-0 to earn the 600th victory in program history.

This is Dyer’s first season as head coach in Elberton. He took over as head coach this year after serving as offensive coordinator. It wasn’t a planned move; Dyer stepped in when Shannon Jarvis was promoted to a role as assistant superintendent for Elbert County Schools.

Dyer and Jarvis have been longtime friends and coached against each other in Gwinnett County. Dyer started the program at Archer in 2009 and Jarvis started the Mill Creek program in 2004. Jarvis went to Elbert County, his alma mater, in 2020. Dyer joined him as OC in 2022.

Dyer went 97-52 at Archer with four region championships and a runner-up finish in 2014, falling to Colquitt County.

Newnan became the 26th program to reach 600 wins, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. Newnan had its first football team in 1901 and has fielded a team each year since 1907. The Cougars are 600-446-36 with 10 region championships.

The winningest coach in program history is the legendary Max Bass, who went 203-103-7 with four region championships in 29 seasons from 1966-1994. Bob Herring went 71-44 with three region championships in 10 seasons from 1999-2008. The current coach is Chip Walker, who is 49-44 in his ninth season.
