Two of the top-ranked teams in Class 5A will vie for supremacy in Region 7 when Milton hosts Gainesville in this week’s GPB Sports Football Fridays in Georgia.

No. 4 Gainesville is 6-1, losing only to Class 6A No. 3 Carrollton. No. 3 Milton is 6-1, losing the season opener to Class 6A No. 2 Buford when the Wolves opened their new stadium on a nationally televised game.

Gainesville and Milton are both 3-0 in league play. The winner will have an advantage when it comes to securing the top seed, although both teams must still face No. 7-ranked Roswell.

Milton won last year’s game 42-24 en route to winning its second straight state championship. Gainesville leads the overall series 3-2, although last year was the first time the clubs had played since 1985.

St. Pius at Marist: The 60th Fish Bowl will be this week’s GPB Stream Game on GPB.org. The contest between the two long-time Atlanta area Catholic school rivals will help determine who gets the top seed in Region 5-4A.

Marist (5-1, 4-0) has won five in a row since losing the season opener to Class 3A No. 7 Jefferson. The War Eagles beat Southwest DeKalb and must still face Lithonia, the other two primary playoff challengers from Region 5.

St. Pius (6-1, 4-1) was beaten by Southwest DeKalb three weeks ago and needs a win to have a chance to win the region championship.

Marist leads the all-time series 38-18-3. The War Eagles have won the last five games and eight of the last nine. Marist won last year 24-0.

North Hall at Greater Atlanta Christian: The winner of this game between the two state-ranked opponents will have the upper hand in Region 6-3A. North Hall (6-0, 3-0) is one of the highest-scoring teams in the state, averaging 46.7 points; the Trojans are ranked No. 3 in Class 3A. Greater Atlanta Christian (5-1, 3-0) and have won five straight since losing the season opener to Class 5A Newnan. The Spartans are ranked No. 5 in the Private division.

Greater Atlanta Christian leads the all-time series 5-1, but North Hall won last year’s game 27-23.

Carver-Columbus at Sumter County: These two Class 2A powerhouses will help settle first place in Region 1. No. 1 Carver (7-0, 4-0) is the defending champion and has not really been tested, winning its games by a margin of 351-44. The Tigers, led by first-year head coach Jarvis Jones, has four shutouts, including the last two weeks. No. 6 Sumter County (7-0, 4-0) has outscored its opponents 333-49 with three shutouts. Carver leads the all-time series 4-1 and won last year’s game 31-0.

Mt. Zion at Bowdon: The Region 7 Class AD2 championship could be on the line when two West Georgia powers meet. No. 4-ranked Bowdon (5-2, 1-0) is coming off a 49-13 win over rival Manchester. Mt. Zion (7-1, 2-0) has won two in a row since losing to Pike County and beat region contender Trion 41-17 last week. Bowdon has dominated the series, winning 35 of 39 meetings and the last six games, winning 49-0 a year ago.
