Week 3: Five games to watch
Primary Content
It doesn’t matter what their records may be, but there are few games in Georgia that create more buzz than when Northside and Warner Robins collide in their annual grudge game.
Northside (0-2) is operating under first-year coach Daniel Williams, who turned the Hughes program into a state power and won a state championship. The Eagles are coming off back-to-back losing seasons and have dropped their first two games, falling to Eagle’s Landing and Baldwin. Warner Robins (1-1) lost its season opener to Lee County, but rebounded to clobber Fayette County.
Another capacity crowd is expected at McConnell Talbert Stadium on Friday night when they renew the rivalry. Warner Robins leads the all-time series 42-25 and has won the last eight meetings.
Here are four other top games to watch this week:
Brookwood at South Gwinnett: The annual “Battle of Snellville” is one or the top rivalry games each year in Gwinnett County. South Gwinnett improved to 2-0 last week with big win over Dutchdown, while Brookwood evened its record at 1-1 by beating Shiloh. South Gwinnett rolled to a 42-20 win a year ago to break the Broncos’ four-game winning streak in the series. Brookwood leads the series 32-10
Prince Avenue Christian at Blessed Trinity: This promises to be an interesting battle between two of the state’s private schools who live in different classifications. Class 4A Blessed Trinity reached the Final Four last year and is off to a 2-0 start this season. Prince Avenue, which played for the Private title last year, is 2-0 under first-year coach Jon Richt. The Wolverines have combined to score 85 points in the two victories. Blessed Trinity won last year’s game 23-21 in the first meeting between the two programs.
Sandy Creek at LaGrange: The two Region 2-3A rivals are both ranked and considered state contenders this season. LaGrange won its first two games and has outscored the opposition 69-15. Sandy Creek has beaten a good East Coweta team and McIntosh. LaGrange opened with wins over Cass and Early County. Sandy Creek won last year’s regular-season game 27-7 but LaGrange earned revenge by beating the Patriots 38-22 in the playoffs. Sandy Creek leads the series 7-1.
Carrollton at Rome: Two of the state’s most iconic programs collide at Rome’s Barron Stadium. Rome will try to bounce back from its season-opening loss to Creekside, where the Wolves had a big lead and lost 48-28. Carrollton has again flashed its great offense – 89 points in wins over Woodward Academy and Columbia. Carrollton won last year’s game 44-22. Carrollton leads the series 7-4 and has won the last three meetings.
