Appalachian State won a huge game over No. 1 Georgia Southern Saturday giving the Mountaineers the inside track to their seventh straight conference title. App State’s defense held the potent Eagles rushing attack to just 10 offensive points and 201 yards of total offense. GSU came in averaging 44.6 points and 369.7 yards per game. Wide receiver Brian Quick caught four passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 9:24 remaining in the game. The Mountaineers’ win proved just how tough it is to win at “The Rock” in Boone, where ASU has won 16 straight and 60 of their last 64 games. True freshman Ronald Blair had eight tackles and a sack on his way to earning SoCon freshman of the week honors. The Mountaineers’ matchup with Furman Saturday looms large. If Furman wins, App State could drop to fourth place in the conference with two losses. … In Wofford’s 48-28 win over Elon, running back Eric Breitenstein rushed for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Elon’s Aaron Mellette caught nine passes for 162 yards and four touchdowns. Breitenstein earned SoCon offensive player of the week honors … Samford crushed Western Carolina 52-24 to continue the Catamounts’ season of misery. Bulldog Fabian Truss won SoCon special teams player of the week after returning a kickoff for a touchdown. … The Citadel dominated VMI 41-14 as Darien Robinson and Ben Dupree each rushed for two scores.
