A Fork in the Road Podcast: North Georgia Wine and Mountain Life at Terra Incognita
Primary Content
Travel with David into the mountains of Rabun County to explore Terra Incognita Vineyard, where Georgia wine, mountain trails, and a sense of adventure come together. You will meet Torsten Ernst, UGA viticulture specialist Dr. Sarah Lowder, and winemaker Alaqua Crawford as we follow North Georgia grapes from the vineyard through the winemaking process and into the tasting room.
A winding Forest Service road carries us through the woods and toward Terra Incognita Vineyard, a place whose name evokes the unknown territory once left blank on old maps. For Torsten Ernst, that sense of discovery is part of the experience. Inspired in part by time spent with family in Germany and the agricultural landscapes of the Black Forest, the vineyard combines wine growing with the outdoor life of the North Georgia mountains. Visitors can explore trails, take in sweeping views, and experience a property designed around both agriculture and adventure.
In the vineyard, we learn why elevation, airflow, sunlight, and steep terrain matter to grape growers in this part of Georgia. Dr. Sarah Lowder, Extension Viticulture Specialist and Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia, explains how varieties such as Traminette respond to the region and how the surrounding environment contributes to what wine drinkers often describe as terroir. Wildlife presents another challenge, with deer, turkey, birds, and even bears competing for fruit as harvest approaches.
Then we follow the grapes indoors with winemaker Alaqua Crawford, who walks us through crushing, destemming, pressing, fermentation, and aging. In the tasting room, the science gives way to flavor as we sample wines including True North, made with Chardonel, and Celestial Spheres, a carbonated blend featuring Muscadine. By the end of the visit, a seat in one of the old Sky Valley ski lift chairs provides the right vantage point for understanding Terra Incognita: a Georgia vineyard where winemaking, landscape, and exploration share the same ground.
