Cold or Allergies?

There is no video for this file.

Sneezing, cough, runny nose. You don’t feel good.
Do you have a cold or is it just allergies? How do you know?
Many of the symptoms are the same. ..but here’s a hint:
Itchy nose, watery eyes – most likely allergies.

Timing of symptoms can also be a clue-
Allergy symptoms will hang around as long as the trigger is there….common triggers include pollen, pet dander, mold….ragweed.

Colds are caused by viruses. Cold symptoms usually go away in 7 to 10 days.

Another tip off- fever – or not having one.
Allergies don’t cause fever. Colds can.
Really bad Sore throat could mean strep- so get tested by your doctor- you may need antibiotics.
High fever and cough- also get checked – you could have pneumonia.
Or you could have flu and need antiviral therapy. To prevent that , make sure you get a flu shot each year
Treatment for both colds and allergies are similar:
antihistamines to ease sneezing and drippy nose,
decongestants to relieve stuffy nose.
But not Antibiotics- they don’t help- with colds or allergies- in fact they can hurt you by increasing risk of superbugs that are resistant to antibiotics that are currently available.

A final word of caution , if symptoms don’t resolve within 10 days
or if they seem to be getting worse, always check with your doctor.
