My Windows Media Player is not working correctly. What do I do?

Check for updates for the driver software for your graphics adapter and Microsoft DirectX from Windows Update. If that doesn't solve the problem, turn down (or turn off) video acceleration by doing the following:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
  2. In the Video acceleration area, move the slider to turn down or turn off video acceleration.

When I try to play video files streamed from the Internet, why do I only hear the audio?

When you receive streamed content, communication occurs between the Player and a Windows Media server regarding the connection speed of your computer. If the Player communicates an incorrect connection speed to the server, the server may try to thin the stream, which means that the stream quality decreases and the Player may lose video altogether.

You can prevent this from happening accidentally by manually specifying the connection speed. In Windows Media Player 7 or later, you can specify your connection speed, by doing the following:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
  2. In the Connection speed area, click Choose connection speed, and then select the appropriate connection speed.

What can I do if I have trouble listening to a radio station?

Try these steps:

  • Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for Windows Media Player. You can find the minimum system requirements in the Readme for Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. If you are streaming a radio station from an online store, the online store provides information about system requirements for playing the radio stations it lists.

  • Verify that Windows Media Player is configured to be the default player for .asx files (a type of playlist that Internet radio stations frequently use). To associate this file type with Windows Media Player, click the arrow below the Library tab, and then click More Options. Click the File Types tab, and then select the Windows Media File (asf) check box. This option enables the Player to play files with a variety of file name extensions, including .asx.

  • Verify that you have the necessary bandwidth to stream the radio station. Windows Media Player will try to adjust to a lower bit rate if the available bandwidth suddenly drops. For example, when you use a cable modem or corporate network, you are sharing bandwidth with other users so the available bandwidth may fluctuate during the course of a song.

  • Sometimes, these fluctuations in bandwidth can result in buffering and a song will pause or skip momentarily. This type of interference is usually temporary and will stop as soon as your connection speed is restored. However, if you continue to experience problems with the audio quality, you can contact Technical Support for your online store (if you are listening to a radio station through an online store).

  • If your Internet connection is lost and Windows Media Player tries to reconnect, the Player might stop responding (or if Windows Media Player is embedded in an Internet Explorer Web page, the browser may stop responding). If this problem occurs, you may be able to fix it by installing a hotfix. For more information, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, see article 840648, "FIX: Windows Media Player 9 Series quits unexpectedly while you are playing online content." Note that this hotfix will also work for later versions of the Player as well.

Can I play any Windows Media Audio (WMA) file?

Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X can play virtually any audio file that has been encoded by using Microsoft Windows Media Audio codec versions 1.0, 2.0, 7, 8, or 9. Although the Player supports all the variants of the Windows Media Audio 9 codec, the following two codecs are only partially supported:

  1. Windows Media Audio 9 Professional codec
  2. Windows Media Audio 9 Lossless codec
