Kayak Guide Michael Gowen, of SouthEast Adventure Outfitters, will take the Georgia Outdoors crew on a 3 day voyage down the Altamaha River. We'll travel over forty river miles from just south of Jesup, Georgia all the way into the Atlantic Ocean.

Along the way we'll meet up with several caretakers of this amazing waterway: the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Altamaha Riverkeepers and The Nature Conservancy.

Oh, and we'll have to fish for our supper!

Description:

In this episode the Georgia Outdoors crew will explore some of Georgia's beautiful streams and waterfalls.

First, we'll join the Department of Natural Resources "Stream Team" to conduct a stream sample survey of Longbranch and Britain's Creeks to determine if these Georgia waters are imperiled. We'll also join area biologists, riverkeepers and high school students in a river clean-up – who knows what we'll find clogging our inner-city waterways. The Georgia Outdoors crew will also meet the folks who run the state's Adopt-a-Stream program – we may even adopt our very own stream in the Decatur area!

Finally, we'll take a day to explore five of North Georgia's most beautiful waterfalls.

The Georgia Outdoros crew takes a canoe trip in the wet and wild swamp of the Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area near Valdosta to examine these creatures and more.

We'll also explore the mystery of the Carolina Bays. Carolina Bays are elliptical shaped marshes with black tannic water that pepper the coastal plain from Florida to Maryland. No one knows how these areas were formed, but many theories abound, including a theory about extraterrestrials!

Description:

In Georgia, families have been "getting away from it all" for decades, but where have they been getting away to?

In the past, Tallulah Falls was an allure for many as were the coastal islands of Tybee and Jekyll. People have been traveling to these areas since the advent of the railroad.

In the present, the Chattahoochee River still provides quiet solitude – even within the Atlanta City limits!

And in the future there is Buck Shoals State Park. Buck Shoals State Park is just one part of the Chattahoochee Land Acquisition Program that has the goal of creating a continuous 180-mile corridor along the Chattahoochee River from Helen to Columbus. This corridor will protect the remaining forests and wildlife habitat, and will enhance Georgia by providing public green space. Georgia Outdoors got to visit the future Buck Shoals State Park and we're sure that it will one day be a great family getaway for Georgians of all ages.

Description:

GPB's own Coastal Naturalist, Cathy Sakas, will join the Georgia Outdoors crew and together we'll set out on a camping adventure traveling up the coast of Georgia.

We'll start by taking the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore, Georgia's southernmost barrier island. Here the horses run free and the salt marshes and tidal creeks glisten with saltwater. Cumberland Island is about the same size as Manahattan, but it's not nearly as crowded!

Next, we'll take another ferry to Sapelo Island. Here we'll learn about the history of the island, it's newly renovated lighthouse and maybe even have a lesson in how to make marsh grass baskets.

Finally, we'll visit Ossabaw Island by boat. Camping is not allowed here but we'll take a tour thanks to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

We'll do all this while spending the night under the stars with the sound of the waves crashing nearby. Life couldn't get any better.

Description:

This is a very special episode of Georgia Outdoors. We will be traveling underground to a cave in southwest Georgia that has never been visited by anyone with a television camera.

Our guides tell us that this is one of the most remarkable caves in the world and they have caved around the globe. It is a tough climb down and in, a beginner shouldn't try it, but it is worth it! Crystal formations fill rooms and corridors from floor to ceiling.

One formation, called angel wings, covers the ceiling of a room so thickly, dripping ever so slowly, that it appears to be many thousands of angels hibernating on the ceiling like bats. It is an extraordinary sight and one not to be missed!

We'll also visit another cave in southwestern Georgia that harbors a colony of thousands of bats. We brought along our infra-red camera so that we could tape these critters undisturbed.

And finally, we'll meet a group of cavers, both adults and children, that have made caving their life.
