Most salt-water anglers never get to see the fish they catch in their natural habitat. On this program, we will! Both natural and artificial reefs provide food and shelter for marine animals like fish, sea turtles, and corals. Join us as we explore the remarkable world of Georgia's reefs and the opportunies they provide for fishing and for diving.

First we'll visit Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary. Located 17 nautical miles east of Sapelo Island, Gray's Reef is something of a crossroads where both northern and tropical species can be found. We'll be there for the summer return of the magnificent and graceful manta rays underwater, and above we'll explore the NOAA research vessel, Ferrel.

Next we'll dive on some of Georgia's artificial reefs and see their very natural wonder. Because only 5 percent of Georgia's continental shelf is made up of areas like Gray's Reef, artificial reefs have been used to enhance fishing opportunities off Georgia's coast. From World War II wrecks and sunken tugboats to concrete pre-formed "flounder hotels", they are a nice place for marine animals to live, and a fascinating place for us to visit.

Though we most often find shellfish on the dinner table, aquatic invertebrates are abundant in Georgia's underwater communities. More than underwater bugs, crustaceans such as shrimp, crab, and crayfish are essential parts of the aquatic food chain. And mollusks like clams, oysters, and mussels provide an additional service to the ecosystem by filtering water and acting as an indicator species. A healthy population means a healthy environment.

Explore the natural history of Georgia through the eyes of William Bartram. Considered by many to be America's first native-born naturalist, William Bartram traveled extensively in Georgia from 1773-1777 cataloging the diverse flora and fauna of the region. Bartram was also an artist and storyteller and one of the first writers to portray personal as well as scientific experience.

There are two trails named for William Bartram in Georgia. First we'll visit a 14-mile multi-use trail that tracks along the southern perimeter of Clarks Hill Lake near Augusta. Later, we'll visit the Georgia Bartram Trail in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Rabun County. This is 37 mile hiking trail and provides a great 4-5 day through-hike or a number of picturesque day-hikes. This trail meets up with the North Carolina Bartram Trail at the state line and continues another sixty miles through the Natahala National Forest.

And lastly we'll embark on a pioneer-style hunting trip using a weapon common in the 1770s the flintlock rifle. Not that our hunter, Dr. Al Freeland, minds. Dr. Freeland is a former history teacher and the Principal of Screven County Middle School where the students have created a living museum called A Walk Through Time. All this and more on Georgia Outdoors!

It has been said that nine out of ten of us couldn't start a conversation with out the weather. Weather affects all of our lives – especially if you like to spend time in the great outdoors! Join Georgia Outdoors as we explore both the good and bad weather conditions that shape our environment.

Weather forecasts are available on television, radio, and the internet 24 hours a day. In the first part of this program we'll explore how that information gets from the National Weather Service in Peachtree City to you. When that forecast is of severe weather this news is especially important.

In the second half of this program we'll learn more about the varying types of severe weather that Georgia experiences including hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, and yes, even earthquakes. We'll discover not only what makes these conditions arise but also witness the devestating aftermath of some of Georgia's most historical severe weather events.

Finally, we'll explore what it takes to stay safe in severe weather conditions.
