Camping was once simply a way life in America. The campsite was either a dwelling or just a place to bed down for the night. Early explorers, hunters, travelers and "cowboys of the old west" set up camp every night and certainly didn't think of it as the recreational pastime we enjoy today.

Part one of this program features a family that rents camping equipment from Geared To Go. Part two is a shopping trip both on the cheap at an army surplus store and then at a top notch outdoors gear retailer. Coastal naturalist Cathy Sakas takes us coastal camping in part three.

The Altamaha River of southeast Georgia is often called the "Little Amazon" for its exotic beauty and its astounding biodiversity.

Kayak Guide Michael Gowen, of SouthEast Adventure Outfitters, will take the Georgia Outdoors crew on a 3 day voyage down the Altamaha River. We'll travel over forty river miles from just south of Jesup, Georgia all the way into the Atlantic Ocean.

Along the way we'll meet up with several caretakers of this amazing waterway: the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Altamaha Riverkeepers and The Nature Conservancy.

Oh, and we'll have to fish for our supper!

Description:

GPB's own Coastal Naturalist, Cathy Sakas, will join the Georgia Outdoors crew and together we'll set out on a camping adventure traveling up the coast of Georgia.

We'll start by taking the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore, Georgia's southernmost barrier island. Here the horses run free and the salt marshes and tidal creeks glisten with saltwater. Cumberland Island is about the same size as Manahattan, but it's not nearly as crowded!

Next, we'll take another ferry to Sapelo Island. Here we'll learn about the history of the island, it's newly renovated lighthouse and maybe even have a lesson in how to make marsh grass baskets.

Finally, we'll visit Ossabaw Island by boat. Camping is not allowed here but we'll take a tour thanks to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

We'll do all this while spending the night under the stars with the sound of the waves crashing nearby. Life couldn't get any better.

Mild winters and long springs and falls invite Georgians to do everything from rafting and hiking to hunting and fishing. This show recommends four outdoor activities for every month of the year.

Description:

Any weekend throughout the year offers plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities in Georgia. Mild winters and long springs and falls invite Georgians to do everything from rafting and hiking to hunting and fishing.

Join us for A Georgia Outdoors Guide to Never Spending a Weekend at Home. We'll explore outdoor activities month by month for Georgians and our visitors. For example, in January, you can visit Sky Valley in North Georgia and learn to snow ski and the next weekend cycle with the Coastal Bicycle Touring Club on the warm coast! March offers both the chance to hunt a turkey, and to raft the Chattooga River. But don't forget fishing and camping. Once the weather heats up, we'll tell you where to go diving one weekend and caving another. And if you've never gone birding, we'll show you what you've been missing and how many places there are to bird in Georgia.

September offers lots of hunting opportunities and Georgia is rich in public fishing areas where you can "wet a hook" all year long. The cooler weather of November offers clear night skies for star gazing and in December you can skip the malls and participate in the Partners in Flight Christmas Bird Counts. So, be careful, if you watch this program, you'll have no excuse to stay at home!

Whether it's a bike race to the top of Brasstown Bald, hiking and stargazing, or bouldering, this episode is packed with fun activities to enjoy atop our highest mountains. We also take a look at the unique ecology and climate found far above sea level.
