Football Fridays Return!

Football Fridays in Georgia are back on GPB! This Friday, we'll kick off our fourth season loaded with some of the best high school football games in the great state. Up first, it’s the Tigers of Archer High School traveling to the Lion’s Den where they'll take on the Peachtree Ridge Lions.

Both these teams have outstanding coaches. Andy Dyer founded Archer's program and led the Tigers to an 11-1 season in 2013. Mark Fleetwood has done a terrific job at the Ridge, leading the Lions last season to an 8-4 record and into the second round of the playoffs.

A Football Hungry Town: Coach Rance Gillespie on Valdosta's Love For The Game

The Valdosta Wildcats are known for playing amongst some of the most dedicated high school football fans in Georgia. Even considering the years of experience Head Coach Rance Gillespie has within the game of football, he is still enthralled by the overwhelming support the surrounding community shows for their favorite Friday night team: the Valdosta Wildcats.

Valdosta was one of my many stops as I neared the end of my "Southern Powerhouse Preview Tour" throughout South Georgia and boy, did I meet some great coaches and athletes along the way!

Born and Raised on Brooks County Football

The Brooks County Trojan family has endured a lot this summer, as three of their athletes were lost in a tragic car accident. But I can't think of a head football coach better suited to lead the rest of the Trojan family through the pain of the losses to holding their heads up and honoring Jicarre Watkins, Shawn Waters, and Johnnie Parker the best way they know how...by giving it all they've got on the football field.

Maurice Freeman spent his playing days as a Brooks County Trojan himself. Now, he's the state-title-winning ringleader of the Trojans as their head coach.

A Point of Pride: Jim Dickerson Talks Clinch County Football

No "Southern Swing" tour is complete without a Clinch County visit. Head Coach Jim Dickerson told me that football is nothing short of a staple for the people of Homerville.

Watch the video below to hear from Jim Dickerson himself.

Here's the itinerary for the rest of the week:

Tuesday, 8/6 - Charlton County, Ware County, Clinch County, Valdosta, Brooks County

Wednesday, 8/7 - In the Game Magazine Studios in Valdosta, Lowndes, Colquitt County, depart for home!

You'll find me next at Pierce County High School...stay tuned for more!

A Man of Few Words: Camden County Star CB Kalvaraz Bessent Talks Wildcat Football

The second stop of my "Southern Swing" tour was Camden County! I scoped out big time cornerback Kalvaraz Bessent on the field after practice to get an athlete's take on the meaning of Wildcat football to the town of Kingsland.

Watch the video below to hear from Kalvaraz!

Next stop...Charlton County!

Here's the itinerary for the rest of the week:

Hinesville Loves Friday Nights: Southern Swing First Stop, Liberty County

The first stop on my fourth annual "Southern Swing" tour was Liberty County, where I caught up with the Panthers' Head Football Coach, Kirk Warner. Coach told me why Friday nights under the lights are so important to the city of Hinesville.

Recent Screven Grads Involved In Truck Crash

This has not been a good off-season for Georgia high school football... and I, honestly, don't like writing these stories...

But, at the same time, I think you should know about these things so you can spread good vibes their way- because the folks in Sylvania really need them right now...

Recently, the HQ has had to report on the death of three Brooks County (GA) football players in a truck crash. Now, we shift to just south of Augusta and where six teens — five that were on the Screven County (GA) High roster last year — were injured in a crash early Sunday morning.

Brooks County Update: Speed May Have Been A Factor (UPDATE On De'Vron Whitfield)

And that seems to be the saddest development in all of this so far, if found out to be true...

Here's the early returns from last night led by WCTV's Julie Montanaro and Andy Alcock
