Shipping Out: The Story of America's Seafaring Women

Shipping Out: The Story of America's Seafaring Women celebrates the modern-day women who work in commercial shipping — on the container ships, bulk cargo carriers and tankers, coastal tugs, barges and ferry boats that traverse America’s waterways. The program explores the history, mythologies and traditional attitudes which, until recently, limited the participation of women in seafaring. This documentary highlights people who continue to reshape the definition of women's work on the seas, including harbor and bar pilots, tug boat captains, marine engineers, mates, ordinary "seamen" and stewards.
