COMMERCE Monte Williams: Career Rushing LeaderWe take a trip back in time in a segment we call the “Prep Sports Plus Classic Playback.” This week we travel back to the fall of 2000 for a feature on Commerce High senior running back Monte Williams. We were fortunate enough to witness Williams breaking the Georgia high school Career Rushing Mark. We will have highlights and post-event comments from that exciting night. GRIFFINThe Griffin High football program tradition dates way, way back, and this year’s group could be one of the very best. With 15 starters back from last season’s 10 & 4 semi-final team, the Bears have added a bit more passing to their attack and find themselves in serious contention again in Class AAAA. LAGRANGELaGrange High senior kicker Joe Mansour has kicked for the varsity during all four of his years. Throughout his career, Mansour averaged 41 yards per punt, and, last season, only 21% of his kickoffs were returned. Mansour has committed to study and play at the University of Kentucky next year. We recognize Mansour as this week’s “Cream of the Crop,” our look at one of Georgia’s senior football standouts. POWDER SPRINGSHaving experienced some tough adversity, the Hillgrove High softball team began the ’09 season winning their first eight games against quality opponents. In only their fourth year of varsity competition, the Hawks are the defending champs in Region 7-AAAA and ranked in the Top 10. BAXLEYAppling County High senior Arthur Williams is a three-year starter on the football team and was an honorable mention on the 2008 All-Region Team. Speaking of All-Region, Williams is a three-time member of the All-Region Academic Team and is currently taking a full load of college preparatory classes while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. |
