FORSYTH – DALTON “Prep Sports Plus Classic Playback”This week’s “Prep Sports Plus Classic Playback” takes us back in time to 1995 for two historical events, each taking place at the beginning of the 1995 football season and highlighting accomplishments by two of Georgia’s most famous football coaches. Mary Persons High’s head football coach Dan Pitts became the winningest coach in history with his 316th coaching win, while Bill Chappell, head coach at Dalton High, hit the 300-win mark with a victory at home, becoming the third Georgia coach to reach the 300-win plateau. QUITMANAfter a dismal 2007 season, Coach Maurice Freeman returned last season to Quitman, his boyhood home, assisting the Trojans of Brooks County High to a 12 & 2 record and Region Championship. Repeating last season’s success will not be easy, but the Trojans are giving it a go in ’09. NEWNAN – ATHENSNewnan High seniors Alec and Alexander Ogletree are twins who know what it takes to compete at a high level on the gridiron. Alec, one of the top safeties in the country, has committed to study and play next year at the University of Georgia. Alexander, known by most as “Zander” is a linebacker with a nose for the ball and is considering a scholarship offer from Florida State University. We recognize the Ogletree twins as this week’s “Cream of the Crop,” our look at two of Georgia’s senior football standouts. DANIELSVILLEThe softball team at Madison County High is not only a competitive team in Class AAAA, but is also competitive in the classroom, having just tied a Minnesota school for#1 team GPA for fast-pitch softball teams in the U.S. ATHENSClarke Central High senior Claire Rosemond has been a state qualifier in cross country and track the past two years. Rosemond’s success in the classroom is even greater. With a 4.0 GPA, Rosemond is ranked fifth in her senior class of 259. We recognize Rosemond as this week’s “Academic Athlete of the Week.”
