A wildlife park in the north Georgia mountains is seeking donations to repair damage from recent flooding. Officials at the North Georgia Zoo and Petting Farm say many of the animals were evacuated to dry ground when heavy rains led to flooding in the past two weeks.
Zoo Atlanta officials say an 8-year-old golden lion tamarin has given birth to a newborn. Zoo spokeswoman Keisha Hines says Robin gave birth to a set of triplet tamarins July 27, but two didn't survive. Animal Management and Veterinary officials say the surviving newborn appears to be thriving and is being closely monitored.
An elderly African lion whose roar could be heard in the surrounding neighborhood has been euthanized at Atlanta's zoo. Veterinarians decided to euthanize 22-year-old Farasi after it became clear age-related complications were harming his quality of life.
Atlanta's zoo is celebrating the world's oldest known living male gorilla. Zoo Atlanta is planning a birthday celebration for Ozzie Friday. The great ape turned 52 on Wednesday. Ozzie was born in the wild in Africa in approximately 1961.
The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta has applied for a permit to bring 18 beluga whales into the country. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the whales would be housed in aquariums and zoological parks around the country. The application is part of a three-year, multimillion-dollar conservation program meant to improve the genetic diversity of belugas in captivity in the U.S.
