City officials in Columbus have approved spending $1.3 million to stabilize two sections of the Chattahoochee River's banks that collapsed along the city's whitewater course. The Columbus City Council approved the money at a meeting on Tuesday.

A new 2.5 mile whitewater rafting course will officially open to the public next Saturday in Columbus. The project has been in the works for several years and required that crews remove two historic dams. Whitewater Columbus cost about $25 million. The City of Columbus pitched in $5 million and the rest of the money came from grants and private donors.

After more than a decade of planning and construction, a man-made whitewater course on the Chattahoochee River will open May 25. It is expected to attract adventurers from around the South. Business and civic leaders on Thursday announced the opening date during a ceremony on a pedestrian bridge overlooking the river.

Three new hotels are opening in the Columbus area in the coming months. Hoteliers are banking on the new whitewater course through downtown and continued business related to Fort Benning to fill the roughly 300 new rooms.

The city of Columbus is tightening the rules for people out on the Chattahoochee River near the city. Starting this week the city is requiring life vests for anyone on the river between the North Highlands Dam and the Columbus Trade Center.
