The owners of a liquified natural gas import facility on Elba Island near Savannah are seeking permission to export LNG. Southern LNG is asking the US Energy Department to approve a request to ship up to $4 million a year out of the country through Georgia.

Work is picking up at the mixed-oxide fuel plant under construction at the Savannah River Site near Augusta. So federal regulators are spending more time reviewing the project as it nears completion in 2016. Regulators met with the public Tuesday to answer questions and provide updates about the U.S. Department of Energy plant, which is roughly 60 percent complete.

Federal energy officials say, they're permanently closing two underground storage tanks that once held radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site near Augusta. The US built the tanks during the Cold War and started cleaning them up in the 1980's. Officials hailed the closures. But they also noted, there are 47 more such tanks that need to be made permanently safe.

Officials at the Savannah River site near Augusta say it’s too early to tell how a new federal report will affect storage of spent nuclear fuel at the facility. President Obama’s Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future released its findings today.

The U.S Department of Energy should restart plans for a permanent storage site for the country’s nuclear waste, according to a recent report. The canceled project would have housed tons of waste from Georgia power plants.
